Professor of Sociology and Public Policy
Research shows that children from minority groups and living in poverty are 250% less likely to be identified for gifted programs, even when they are performing at the same levels as their peers. Dr. Harris, a renowned Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, will highlight the central role education plays in social and economic well-being, particularly for these under-served children. Dr. Harris will outline the importance for understanding racial differences in achievement.
Co-founder
It takes a community to ignite potential. Tim Marzullo, co-founder of Backyard Brains, will demonstrate how to inspire learning by exposing children to advanced scientific material. Dr. Marzullo and colleagues are working to create a neuro revolution by breaking down barriers for young students to learn neuroscience.
Screenwriter
Being gifted does not mean your life is without challenge or trouble. Tom Flynn, screenwriter of the acclaimed film, Gifted, will be featured in a panel discussion on the struggles gifted children and their families face. Gifted highlights some of the unique learning needs of gifted children and the frustration they face when many know nearly 50 percent or more of early elementary school material on the first day of class.
