Escott O. Norton speaks on all aspects of historic theatres, from the earliest beginnings of this unique form of architecture to current adaptive reuse possibilities. Depending on the audience the presentations can be engaging monologues or include a hands-on workshop element. Presentations can be localized, comparing the each city's movie palace history in a national context.
Escott O. Norton grew up in the worlds of both theatre and architecture. His mother Sally co-founded the Occidental College Summer Drama Festival, and his father Oakley, a math teacher and pioneer in progressive education, designed and built all of Escott’s childhood homes.
Escott was drawn to historic theatres from an early age, and the Rialto Theatre in South Pasadena, CA was his first. He founded Friends of the Rialto in 1983 to advocate for its protection. He was a charter member of the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation, a nationally recognized preservation advocacy organization, and served as its executive director for six years.
Suzanne Siegel, Ebell Club Program Chair
Escott Norton’s presentation of the historic theatres of Downtown Los Angeles for the Highland Park Ebell Club provided a fascinating glimpse of the past for members. His slides and anecdotes brought these venerable theatres to life. Club members responded with enthusiasm for preserving Los Angeles‘ cultural heritage. The Ebell Club would be delighted to have him as a speaker again in the future.
Los Angeles Breakfast Club
Escott gave his Coloring Historic Theatres to our organization and guests loved both how interactive the presentation was (excellent coloring!) and Escott’s thorough knowledge of historic preservation of theatres around L.A. He was also very responsive and easy to work with. Would definitely recommend having Escott speak at your event!
